Introduction

The ocean, our common heritage, is key to sustaining all humankind on the planet. Our sustainable future cannot be realized without a clean and healthy ocean. To achieve a clean and healthy ocean indispensably requires sound scientific inputs and technological innovations.

The Western Pacific and its adjacent areas are the most densely populated region and home to the highest level of marine biodiversity and endemism in the world. As the region’s position as the growth engine of the world economy has intensified in recent years, escalating human activities, coupled with climate change and ocean acidification, have been putting the ocean under the risk of irreversible damages. Thus, to achieve ocean sustainability in this region are vital to humans’ survival and prosperity not only for the region, but for the whole world.

To ensure ocean science can fully support countries in achieving sustainable development of the ocean, seas and marine resources, the United Nations has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) that offers all ocean stakeholders[1] a unique, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shape a better ocean science agenda and connect ocean science more closely to our society.

Responding to the global call for actions, the UNESCO/IOC[2] Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), Thailand through its Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) cordially invite you to join in the 11th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference that will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, 24-27 August 2021.

The Conference, on the eve of the UN Decade of Ocean Science, provides an essential opportunity for all ocean stakeholders to advance ocean knowledge, catalyze inter- and cross-disciplinary collaborations, energize the ocean science for future generations, identify and develop solution-oriented approaches to ocean sustainability that this particular region endeavors to achieve.
